| The Chengdu Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was found as the Sichuan Branch of CAS in March, 1958, and was renamed to Southwest Branch in 1962. Its administrative headquarter was transferred to the Sichuan provincial government. And it started under the present name “Chengdu Branch” in January, 1978 since its reconstruction.
The Chengdu Branch is an agency of Chinese Academy of Sciences in charge of connection and coordination of institutes and companies in Sichuan area, including the Institute of Optics and Electronics, CAS; Chengdu Institute of Biology, CAS; Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS; Chengdu Library of CAS, Chengdu Organic Chemicals Co., Ltd., CAS; Chengdu Information Technology Co., Ltd., CAS; Chengdu Wish Instruments Co., Ltd., CAS.
The Chengdu Branch of CAS possesses a series of state-level, institute-level and co-established combined key laboratories, engineering centers, field stations and bases for science education, such as the laboratory of optical technologies for microfabrication, the key laboratory of beam steering, the key laboratory of mountain disaster and earth surface process, the key laboratory of automated evaluotion and program generation, the laboratory of amphibians and reptiles, the national engineering research center for natural medicines, the national engineering research center for chiral drugs and intermediates, the simulation laboratory of debris flow, the specimen center of animal and plant life, the observation station of Dongchuan debris flow, etc. The range of research and technical field covers mathematics, chemistry, biology, geoscience, dynamics, photics, electronics, mechanics, materials science, computer science, and documentary information science, etc. And the Chengdu Branch of CAS has competitive facilities in adaptive optics, micro-electronics, laser, optical-electro-mechanical integration, natural product research, genetic breeding, asymmetric synthesis, polymer material, gas conversion, computer application system, research and development on intelligent education software, research on mountain ecology and disaster prevention, development on scientific instruments and scientific and technological information consultation, etc.
By the end of 2008, Chengdu Branch of CAS has a staff of almost 3000 persons ,nearly 2000 of them are scientists and engineers, including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, nearly 200 researchers and about 600 research associates. There are 6 mobile stations for post-doctors, 14 training centers for candidate for doctorate, 33 training centers for candidates for master degree, and about 1000 post doctorates, Ph. D. candidates and master candidates.
In 2008, the Chengdu Branch followed the development idea of “exerting comprehensive advantages to push ahead the innovation and to promote the regional development” proposed by the current leading group. On one hand, to overcome the earthquake, carry out relief work, rehabilitation and reconstruction, and on the other hand to develop byinnovation. To Sstrictly enforce the academy-development policy in new era, carry out the development strategy of CAS, actively promote the scientific and technical innovation, industrialization of high and new technologies. Great progresses have been made on the works such as party building and leading group building, the cooperation between the academy and locals, personnel training and innovative cultural construction, which contributes a lot to the improvement of companies and organizations in Chengdu area, the regional economy and social development.
